Bandh over Vanzara letter: Gujarat Congress leaders detained

District level Congress leaders across Gujarat have been arrested ahead of a bandh called on Friday by the opposition party over DG Vanzara's controversial letter criticizing chief minister Narendra Modi. Congress also lashed out at the Gujarat government for breakdown of law and order and constitutional machinery in the state.

President Obama 'sure Syria behind chemical attack'

US President Barack Obama says the US has concluded that the Syrian government carried out a chemical weapons attacks near Damascus.
He said the use of chemical weapons affected US national interests and that sending a "shot across the bows" could have a positive impact on Syria's war.

Son of SP leader sentenced to life term for raping minor

BADAUN: Son of a SP leader was sentenced to life imprisonment and a penalty of Rs one lakh was also imposed on him by a local court here for raping a teenaged girl.


The 15-year-old victim was raped by Varun Bharadwaj alias Chinu, son of fomer SP block head Patanjali Bhardwaj, in Alapur area on December 27, 2010, prosecution counsel Gyan Swaroop Gupta said.

After hearing both the sides, Additional District Judge S N Tripathi held Chinu guilty yesterday, he said.

The court also said that from the amount of the fine imposed, Rs 70,000 be given to the victim.

It also directed to lodge an FIR against three persons, including the then station officer of Alapur Pradeep Shukla, for disclosing the identity of the victim.

Man arrested for raping 6-yr-old girl in Aligarh

A man in his mid-thirties was arrested on Sunday morning for allegedly raping and murdering a six-year-old girl in Aligarh, which was rocked by violent protests against the incident.

Strong earthquake hits Iran, tremors felt in north India

Strong tremors rocked large parts of north India, including the national capital and its adjoining areas on Tuesday evening. Supreme Court verdict on Devinder Pal Bhullar's mercy plea today

The Supreme Court on Friday will pronounce the much-awaited verdict on the petition of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, who had sought commutation of his death penalty to life sentence on the ground that there was inordinate delay by the President over his plea for clemency. 

Bhullar was sentenced to death in 2003 for carrying out a bomb blast outside Delhi youth Congress office in 1993. He had approached the Supreme Court in 2011, saying that his death sentence should be commuted to life imprisonment, because there was an inordinate delay by the President over his plea for clemency. 

His mercy petition was pending for 8 years. Bhullar had filed his original mercy plea to commute the sentence to life imprisonment in 2003. It was rejected in 2011, a week after he approached the Supreme Court. 

Devinderpal Singh Bhullar was sentenced to death in 2003 for carrying out a bomb blast outside Delhi youth Congress office in 1993.
The apex court's verdict will also lay precedence for others on death row like the Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts.
