New Delhi: One person died and two
others were injured as clashed erupted between locals and police in East
Delhi. Though police have denied firing at the mob and have claimed
that they only used tear gas to disperse the crowd, bullet injuries have
reportedly been found on the body of the dead and those injured.
Fifteen police personnel were also injured in the incident and about six to seven locals are
being treated at Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hospital and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB) Hospital.
Two police post, half a dozen low-floor DTC buses, about a dozen two wheelers and four wheelers are reported to have been damaged in the incident.
Earlier reports said that the violence erupted following a "rumour" of a death of a man after falling off from his scooter at a police picket. Police lobbed tear gas shells and used force to disperse the crowd.
The police have claimed the man was drunk and fell off his two wheeler at a vehicle checking picket when he was signalled to stop for not wearing
a helmet. But the eye witnesses have claimed that he ignored the signal and tried to flee but a police man tried to stop him and he fell down. He was then hit by a vehicle which was behind the scooter. Police, however, have denied the allegations.
However, police claimed that when a "rumour" spread in the area that the victim died in the incident and enraged locals gathered near the police post and clashed with the personnel. The mob then went on a rampage setting afire the police post and many vehicles including buses and trucks.
As the crowd continued to indulge in violence, a top Delhi Police official said that a rumour triggered the violence and the situation was brought under control soon.
