Seven passengers, including an Australian woman and two five-year-old girls, were burnt alive and at least 12 received injuries as two AC coaches of the Howrah-Dehradun Express caught fire around 2.30 am today as it was passing through Giridih district in Jharkhand.
While authorities are yet to find out the exact cause of the fire, which left the two three-tier AC coaches completely burnt, union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi said they were
not ruling out the involvement of “miscreants”.
The fire started in the B1 coach, between the Parasnath and Nimiyaghat railway stations, and spread to the interlinked B2 coach. The two coaches of the train that started from Howrah last night were carrying a total of 128 passengers. All casualties were reported from the B1 coach.
Among the seven dead, only four have been identified as yet, including Anumita Singh Gour (26) of Gwalior; Neha Joba Ali Akhtari, the five-year-old daughter of Akmul Ali of Raibala Cantt in Uttarakhand; Archita Thakur, the five-year-old daughter of Dr Ajai Thakur of Ranchi; and the 23-year-old Australian M S Rose.
