2 killed, 23 hurt as female ward of Kasturba hospital building collapses

BHOPAL: Two persons were killed and about 26 others were injured, four of them critically, when a portion of the two-storeyedKasturba hospital building, run by Bharat Heavy ElectricalsLim-ited (BHEL), collapsed on Friday evening. The portion of the building that collapsed housed the female ward on the upper floor.

However, unconfirmed reports put the toll at four. Twenty three people including a four-year-old child have
been rescued - 15 of them patients.

Two bodies was extricated from the debris, said official sources. The deceased were identified as Arun Sisodia and Mohammad Jameel.

A repair and maintenance work was in progress on the ground floor of the building.

The rescue operation is still being carried out as some more people are feared trapped inside the debris.

Executive director of the BHEL Bhopal Shashi Ranjan Prasad said, "All the patients listed in the register of the hospital have been rescued. A committee has been constituted to probe the reasons into the building collapse. It has been asked to submit its report soon", he told reporters at the accident site.

He said that apprehensions are there that three to four more people may still be trapped in the debris. "The details or identity of these people are not known as of now," he said.

District collector Nikunj Shrivastava said, "15 patients and nine attendants have been rescued".

The portion of the building that collapsed was about 40-year-old. It is apprehended that some labourers who were also engaged in the maintenance work on the ground floor may have also been trapped, sources said.

The number of labourers engaged in the renovation work is still known. Likewise, the details of the construction agency or the contractor who was carrying out the work was also not known.

Hospital sources also claimed that there were about 20 attendants of the patients in the hospital when the building part caved in.

A rescue work jointly carried out by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, district police, the CISF and BHEL personnel was on. Five JCB machines and a crane were also deployed in the rescue operation. The hospital building was constructed in mid sixties when the BHEL factory was established in Bhopal. The hospital was initially meant for the BHEL employees. Later it's facilities were opened for non-BHEL staff.
