Even as two Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad supporters were
arrested on Thursday for vandalism at Presidency University, TMC
ministers sought to downplay the party's involvement in Wednesday's
trouble.
Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee said
that while the government would launch a thorough investigation into the
incident, the party will also investigate it internally.
"I am scared of the developments at Presidency University. Those
who did the mischief, whichever party they showed allegiance
to, will
definitely be punished. But my contention is: can you prove it was
Trinamool people who indulged in this kind of vandalisation? We have
different reports,'' Mukherjee said.
Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee came down heavily on
Presidency Vice-Chancellor Malabika Sarkar, who had said that people
with Trinamool flags had entered the campus and attacked students and
teachers. Chatterjee said, "Before intimating the media, the V-C should
have lodged an FIR and she should have informed the Governor."
Video footage aired by TV channels showed TMC councillor Partha
Basu leading protests outside the institution. Basu denied a hand in the
vandalism.
Mamata stable
The condition of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was admitted
to a hospital on Wednesday, is stated to be stable. A medical bulletin
released by the hospital said that she was suffering from pain in joints
and legs. Governor M K Naryanan visited the hospital on Thursday.
